RRNC – Passive Mitigation Designs

Radon Resistant New Construction is often referred to as passive systems are installed in new construction and rely solely on the convection flow of air upward in the vent pipe for sub-slab depressurization. These systems may consist of multiple vent pipes, including vertical and angled runs not necessarily routed through conditioned space that may be joined to a single termination from the suction pit typically 12 inches above the roof. Passive systems are not acknowledged mitigation systems per se but a widely accepted approach to preventing a radon problem or preparing new construction homes for an active system to prevent the need for retrofitting a system to the exterior of the home which can adversely impact the aesthetic integrity of the home as well as limit the life of the mitigation system due to exposure to the elements.
